Arthritis Pain Relief and Supplements: What You Need to Know


Do you suffer from arthritis or know someone who does?  For arthritis sufferers, pain becomes a fixture in their life.  Over-the-counter medications do provide relief, but it short lived.  As soon as the medication wears off, the pain returns.  There is hope though.  For many, that hope comes in the form of natural and dietary supplements.  Just a sample of the supplements that can provide relieve include devil’s claw, ginger, stinging nettle, flax, and ASU.

You now know that some herbal and dietary supplements can provide arthritis relief.  Your first thought may be to run to the drug store.  Wait!  Before you make your purchase, there a number of things you should know about these supplements.

These herbal supplements are not worth putting your health at risk.  As previously stated, some supplements counteract with over-the-counter and prescribed medication.  If you are in severe pain, you may be willing to make the switch.  You may stop taking your diabetes medication to take devil’s claw, and so forth.  This is not recommended.  Never stop taking prescribed medication.  Once again, speak to a healthcare professional.  Many supplements provide relief and are safe to take.  Your doctor can advise you on which supplements are best.

A world of information is available online.  Almost fifty herbal, natural, and dietary supplements can aid in arthritis relief.  Some treat joint inflammation and swelling, while others treat sleep difficultly, decreased mobility, cartilage damage, and pain.  Which is right for you?  An online internet search will tell.  Read reviews to see what people have to say.  Look for both positive and negative reviews.  It is rare for a product to receive rave reviews, but be cautious of telltale signs, such as “scam,” “waste of money,” or “too many side effects.”

Speaking of the side effects, know what they are.  Then, make an informed decision.  Arthritis sufferers should examine the risk to determine if they are worth it.  For example, cat’s claw is a supplement used to reduce inflammation.  Possible side effects include headaches, vomiting, and dizziness.  If your job requires you to be on your feet all day, the dizziness may be too much to handle.  Look for an arthritis-helping supplement that has little to no side effects.

You can and should find the best deals.  In terms of supplements, the best deal isn’t always the lowest price.  Aim for the best quality for the lowest price.  This is where the above mentioned research comes in handy.  Look for specific brand names with positive feedback.  When buying online, compare the size with prize and include the cost of shipping.

You must follow all directions.  Herbal supplements are typically safe to use, when taken as directed.  Different brands use similar extracts, but those amounts vary.  Consult with your primary care physician or the bottle to get an exact dosage.  Despite the common belief, more will do no good.  In fact, it may cause complications.

Finally, if you take herbal supplements on a daily basis, write down and tape to your refrigerator.  Also, inform those close to you.  In the event you need medical care and cannot speak for yourself, responding personnel must know all medications you are taking, including supplements.

Cooking with Children



I am fairly certain that most of us have either seen or at the very least heard of the hit situation comedy “Married with Children” that dominated television for quite a few years and is still shown in syndication in many markets around the world. There are some wonderful insights that are shown by this often dysfunctional family and a few pearls to bring into your every day lives. The same can be said when it comes to cooking with children.

There is little on this earth that can teach you about yourself and the way your children view you as easily as cooking with your children. Of course, this is the perfect opportunity for many of us to let our hair down a little, relax, and have fun in the kitchen. Unfortunately, if you are anything like me, this is a difficult process to say the least. I am a bit of a control freak in my kitchen. It is my domain or sovereign territory so to speak. For this reason it is difficult to give up that little bit of control and hand over the reigns to any one of my children.

On the other hand, I know they are learning important skills that they honestly need to know in life. This knowledge of course doesn’t make it any less difficult when I’m scraping tomato sauce out of places I would never have thought to discover it on my own. If you are considering cooking with children you need to make sure you have the proper ingredients on hand before beginning. You certainly do not want to be caught without that cup full of patience you will be requiring nor do you wish to need to leave in the middle of things for a run to the local grocery store to pick up the missing ingredients.

Another great rule of thumb when it comes to cooking with children is the KISS rule. Keep it simple silly. This rule will help out more than you ever realize. First of all, most children have relatively short attention spans. While they want to learn and help mommy out, they also do not want to have enough time to get bored with the details. Use simple recipes when cooking with children and your chances for success will be much greater than with overly complicated or ingredient intense recipes.

As if this wasn’t enough to absorb another very important rule when it comes to cooking with children is to clean as you go whenever possible. Trust me on this. While there is part of you who will want to put off the task of cleaning the messes that are made until later, or wait till the end and only clean once, this allows the opportunity for messes to layer and compound themselves. Constantly clean throughout the process for the best possible results. You should enlist your children in the cleaning process as well. While it may be easier to do yourself, it is far more important to teach them the basics of cleaning as you go. Remember one day they will more than likely invade your kitchen while you’re not looking.

Cooking with children can be an incredible way to have a fun day if you are able to let go of the control that you too often hold over the kitchen. Give over the keys to your kingdom for a day of fun and frolicking among the flour and sugar and see just how many wonderful memories you can make with your little ones along the way.

Beat the Summer Heat with Crock Pot Cooking

When the weather outside warms up, the kitchen can be a terrible place to be. There are many things you can do however, when it comes to cooking a nice home made meal that doesn’t require traditional stove top or oven cooking. Learn to utilize some of the lesser heat producing equipment in your kitchen, such as the crock pot, in order to truly beat the summer heat and keep your cool while preparing a nice hot meal for friends and family. So, how does crock pot cooking really help beat the heat? Simply put, the crock pot in and of itself puts off far less heat when cooking than an oven or stove top. This is the first and possibly the best reason to utilize the crock pot in your summer meal planning. You should also consider the fact that by not heating the house by using your stove top or oven you are also preventing your air conditioning (or other cooling methods) from working overtime in order to compensate for the additional heat that other cooking methods introduce. This makes crock pot cooking a win-win situation as the costs involved in operating a crock pot are far less than the costs involved in operating a stove or oven in general. Whether electric or gas, your stove and oven are often serious energy hogs. Add to that the fact that you are not raising the temperature in your home by traditional means of cooking and you are using even less electricity. Unfortunately for most, the general consensus has been that crock pots were meant for comfort foods and hearty winter meals. The truth is that the crock pot should be one of your best loved and most often utilized cooking methods if you can manage it. When it comes to cooking with a crock pot, the options are almost limitless. Almost anything that can be baked can be made in the crock pot and many, many more wonderful and enticing meals and treats as well. Benefits of Crock Pot Cooking In addition to the cost benefits mentioned above when it comes to crock pot cooking there are many other benefits that are well worth mentioning. First of all, the bulk of the work involved in crock pot cooking takes place early in the day when you are refreshed rather than at the end of a hectic work or play day. This means that you are less likely to forget an ingredient or make other mistakes that often occur as we hurriedly prepare a dinner when we are exhausted from the activities of our day. Second, many great crock pot recipes include the vegetables that insure we are getting the nutrients we need. This means that there will not be mountains of dishes to be either hand washed or loaded into the dishwasher (or if you are like me—both) afterwards. You can spend less time cleaning just as you spent less time slaving over a hot stove. Oh wait! Make that no time slaving over a hot stove. Once clean up is complete you can get back to enjoying the sun set, chasing the lightening bugs with your little ones, or waiting for the first star. While there will never be a one size fits all best cooking method, crock pot cooking comes very close. Acid Reflux can have long Term Effects if you don’t Treat it



While millions of people suffer from acid reflux, that doesn’t mean you should just learn to live with it. In addition to being painful and hard to deal with it can result in some long term effects for you that aren’t good. In fact, in worse case scenarios that failure to treat acid reflux can result in death. That is because the esophagus will continue to get narrower and that makes it harder to breath.

You also make your body more susceptible to cancer in the esophagus and the development of ulcers in the stomach when you don’t treat acid reflux. Many individuals develop severe respiratory infections and problems due to untreated acid reflux. It can allow fluids to enter the lungs and then they become inflamed and infected. If you already have major health concerns including asthma then you are only going to see them getting worse.

Even if your acid reflux doesn’t affect you to that extreme it is going to affect your life in many ways. If you are up several nights a week due to it then you aren’t going to be able to get the rest you need. That can make it hard for you to concentrate and you will be irritable. You can also end up physically sick if you don’t get the rest that your body needs.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is present when you have chronic acid reflux. It is going to result in the esophagus becoming inflamed and irritated. This type of disease is going to continue allowing further damage to the esophagus to occur if you don’t take action for it. This may require prescription medications that you take daily. If the condition is severe you may need to consider surgery in order to stop further damage.

Barrett’s esophagus is a common ailment when acid reflux has gone untreated. This results when the lining of the esophagus has suffered quite a bit of damage. As a result of so much acid in there is begins to eat away at this protective lining. This is a very rare condition that is diagnosed in individuals with untreated GERD. Many individuals with Barrett’s esophagus begin to loss weigh rapidly as they have a great deal of trouble swallowing foods and drinks.

The term esophagitis refers to an irritation in the esophagus. Generally the individual will have a red, swollen esophagus that is inflamed. It will be very difficult to breathe, eat, and swallow. You may not even be able to swallow pills to help reduce the formation of acid so injections may be necessary.

Esophagitis is very serious because a person is likely not getting all the nutrients they need. There is also a very big chance of bacteria forming in the esophagus which will result in infections. It is also known to lower the effectiveness of the immune system which means the individual is more susceptible to an array of different illnesses.

Esophageal cancer has become a common diagnosis due to the number of people with untreated acid reflux in our society. If the cancer isn’t found right away it can spread into other parts of the body. The cancer cells can spread very rapidly so aggressive treatment has to be taken. It is harder to fight though once the cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. Seeing a doctor early when you aren’t able to cure your acid reflux issues will help prevent this from becoming a reality.

Since there are many different ways in which acid reflux can end up having long term effects on you take care of it now. Don’t let it escalate into something that causes severe damage to your body. Doing so will mean you have even more serious health concerns to take care of in the future. Focus on staying as healthy as you can so that you will be able to enjoy a long and happy life.

Acid Reflux and Pregnancy

A woman’s body goes though a variety of changes during a pregnancy. While this is a very exciting time there are issues including acid reflux that can make it difficult to enjoy all aspects of it. There is an old wives tale that pregnant women with acid reflux means the child will be born with a full head of hair. However, the truth if it is that acid reflux is the result of changes in the body due to additional hormones. These hormones can result in a woman producing more acid in her stomach. Since it isn’t uncommon for pregnant women to eat more than before they will continue to produce even more of it. The combination of them can result in some of the acid moving up into the esophagus. Up to ¼ of all pregnant women have to deal with acid reflux each day of their pregnancy. This can make it hard for them to focus on their daily routine or to get enough sleep at night. As the pregnancy progresses there is more pressure on the stomach area. This too can result in more acid moving into the esophagus. That is why the majority of pregnant women find that they suffer from acid reflux during the last few months of it. Since what the woman consumes affects the baby there are limits on what can be taken. Most types of prescription medications for acid reflux won’t be a good idea. It is possible to take antacids to treat mild cases of acid reflux during pregnancy. Extensive research has shown that they don’t harm the baby. Pregnant women do need to be careful though as they contain large amounts of sodium. This can result in fluids being retained and swelling in the legs and ankles. Every woman wants her baby to be as healthy as possible and that is understandable. That is why natural ways to alleviate acid reflux during the pregnancy is important. While consuming plenty of fresh fruits is important some of them may increase your risk of acid reflux. Avoid those that contain large amounts of acid in large quantities. They include oranges, lemons, and grapefruit. Do your best to eat six small meals each day so that you aren’t hungry. Your body will be able to digest these smaller meals easier than large ones. Consume large amounts of water during the day too so that you stay hydrated. Liquids definitely help the body to be able to digest foods easier. Avoid eating in the last hours before you go to bed at night or you may end up suffering throughout the night with acid reflux. Elevate your head and shoulders when you sleep as well. This will help to keep the acid from going into the esophagus at night or when you rest during the day. There are special pillows for this or you can just stack two of them. You can also have someone elevate the head of your bed with boards or bricks for you. Adding several inches will definitely make a significant difference. Try to lie on your left side too as this will help to get the acid reduced in your stomach. When you lie on your right side or your back it is going to increase. It may not always be comfortable during a pregnancy to lie on your left side but do your very best to get into that routine. It will certainly help you to avoid suffering from acid reflux. Following such guidelines will help you offset acid reflux during pregnancy. This is a great time for a mom to be so keep those negative aspects of it away. Getting enough rest is important too because soon you will have a little one up all night. If you continue to suffer from acid reflux on a regular basis during your pregnancy make sure you share this information with your doctor.
